With funding assistance from Dr. H. James Free, Dr. Robert Cade, and Dr. Mark Barrow, the Harrell History Archives began in 2001 and has continued to collect, preserve, and make accessible materials relating to Health Center history. The archives received other grant assistance including a grant from the NHPRC to rescue and preserve dean’s office and vice president’s office records. Included among archive activities are contributions to reunions, histories, 50th anniversary celebrations and publications for many colleges in the Health Center. Since its creation, the archives organized, described, and digitized a large collection (7,000+) of photographs documenting health center history and these images are available for use via the Digital Library Project. The archives also provides materials for historical research and book projects and is nationally listed with the National Library of Medicine as a medical history archives. In 2011, the HSC archives became a part of the Health Science Center Libraries.
